I remember one of my professors in college telling me that your thoughts are what you feed the most. Focus on the good and good thoughts will follow. Bad thoughts and… well you may not want to go there.
The best part is we get to choose how we want to think and what we focus on for the rest of our life. It will evolve over time but you want to keep learning and growing. The worst thing is you can let others decide for you! And that comes in so many shapes and forms. Just watch a few hours of TV and you can see what people are peddling to make your life easy or make an attempt to shape your thoughts.
A friend of mine Mickey Mellen shared in a recent blog post on his website (I recommend you follow him!) a passage he read in “Steal Like An Artist“, author Austin Kleon puts it this way:
“You don’t get to pick your family, but you can pick your teachers and you can pick your friends and you can pick the music you listen to and you can pick the books you read and you can pick the movies you see. You are, in fact, a mashup of what you choose to let into your life. You are the sum of your influences. The German writer Goethe said, “We are shaped and fashioned by what we love.”
In today’s hectic world and the vast amount of information we have access to these days, it becomes harder and harder to find direction and focus as we move forward to becoming the person God wants you to become. Best part! You get to choose any direction that you want to go. Don’t let anyone tell you differently! No matter what you choose Mickey commented, “I hope you’ll choose things that bring more gratitude, empathy, and kindness into your life…”.
Pick your friends, teachers, mentors, and guides for your life wisely as they will influence your life’s direction and the decisions you make. Oh! I hope you decide to make sure you have a great deal of FUN along the way as well.
